It’s Not Always About Money

I was checking out a blog called The Practice of Leadership by a man named George Ambler. It was titled The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us (the original article was updated and replaced by one titled Leadership Develops When You Escape Your Comfort Zone). On the post, he had the video that I've posted below, a presentation by Dan Pink, who's written many books on the changing face of the working world. I'm glad George found this video and shared it with the rest of us; it's quite entertaining, to say the least.
Not to give the premise of the video away, but he talks about experiments that were conducted showing that money isn't always what motivates anyone to do better work. That's not surprising, as I've mentioned it here and there on this blog and in my newsletters. However, what Pink talks about in the video goes deeper than that, to the point where you wonder just where he's going to take you after hitting you with a surprising point. Well, you'll find out in the video.
If you're a business owner with employees, you really need to watch this video and learn something from it. Your business will grow from it, and you'll be a better leader.

Well, it makes sense to me.
Unfortunately, many companies don’t have decision makers working in the field, and therefore have no idea of how their decisions are often harmful to the business.

Good point, Rasheed. I think that interactions between management and employees need to be stronger so that management is more empathetic to employee needs and will then know how better to motivate them. It’s funny because I talk to this one manager who seems to feel it’s not her job to motivate anyone, that people need to do the job they’re hired for. It’s definitely old school thinking.
