I knew of Kim Bachstein way before I met her. At one point in my early consultancy I was reaching out to employment agencies just to let them know I was there for management training and executive coaching, and though we didn’t get to talk, one look at her picture and she was hard to forget. I actually met her for the first time at a Mary Kay meeting; talk about being in weird places at weird times. Over the years we’ve become very good friends, and I’ve written about her and her company often when it comes to great customer service. Kim is an original; she’s tried a lot of things and had many successes. For those things that haven’t been as successful, she hasn’t failed; she’s learned and gotten better.

2. What made you decide to go into this business?

After a decline in corporate jobs throughout NYS in 2001 and 2002, I realized I was not going to be a “head hunter” anymore. Having so many “exceptional candidates” to fill positions that just where not out there was frustrating, challenging and quite honestly, I was very burned out.

It was 2002 that I decided to close my Staffing Firm, (Career Enterprises) and move forward to try something new. I didn’t know at first what to do (I did not have a Plan B in place, in fact, there was no Plan B) – it took me 8 months to figure out a game plan and then poof (a cloud overhead rained on me) it was all very clear.

My friend, Lynn was celebrating her birthday in July. I was out shopping for some of her “favorite things” I remember it so clear, bath and body products, chocolates, flavored coffees, her favorite linen candle and a copy of her favorite movie on CD.

It was time to wrap it all up, into a basket it went and there was my “AHA Moment” for sure. This seemed creative, easy and fun, I could definitely do this.

July of 2002, Gift Solutions By Kim.com was born. After much research, developing and implementing a business plan here I was.

My story behind entering the Real Estate Industry is even simpler.

Selling real estate has been a long time career goal since I graduated from high school. Now, 20 years later, January 2008, I finally accomplished my lifetime dream to help family’s find there special home. Remember, it’s never too late to be or do what you want to be and do in life.

It was no time like the present to forge ahead and in these past few months my spirit has been rejuvenated, my business, family and in the personal relationships that I have built along the way.

3. What types of challenges have you had along the way?

When I speak of challenges I have had along the way in my career, I am referring to my gift business since I just started my real estate career.

I think of challenges as solutions, I really try to see beyond to the greater good. Remember that without challenges there will be no rewards.

CHALLENGE 1

The first 3 months of opening my gift shop came my first big challenge.

I was served with a cease and desist letter from a local competitor for owning a domain name. It was a long and frustrating road (many articles were written about me in the local business papers, by this competitor, her mother and her friends, I received harassing e-mails directly from the owner’s mother accusing me of trying to be her daughter) It was really nasty and I’m glad it’s over.

I prevailed by hiring a trademark attorney to prove that I was doing nothing illegal by owning a domain name (which had nothing to do with my competitor)

The worst part of this experience for me was that I took a lot of this personally, it’s hard not to when your being attacked and your attorney says your doing nothing wrong. Live and Learn.

I kept saying to myself this person, her friends and family don’t even know me as a person – they see this one thing that they think is illegal and WAS PROVEN NOT TO BE and that’s all they see. Then I read a book by Donald Trump and I felt better knowing one of his favorite quotes is: “Business is Business, Personal is Personal.

I started to implement a new way of thinking and guess what? If it makes me a bitch then so be it, but my friends, clients and business associates know who I am.

Another challenge I encountered into my third year was ups and downs with employees. I interviewed and trained and molded them to work my way.

I had a more than a few bad eggs and it was stressful.
There’s an old saying: Good help is hard to find. –
I’m here to tell you that is the truth.

It was time I faced it there is only one ME… and forget cloning it doesn’t work.

During this process I learned, never hire friends, it doesn’t work out, it just doesn’t.

This is where Challenge 2 EVOLVED into a REWARD

In January 2008, I made the best decision of my life, personally just for me.

I struggled making this decision for at least 8 months, do I close my storefront and move it to my house or NOT…

On the up side, I decided to move my company to my new home and run things myself with continued help from mom and dad, not only was this the best decision I have ever made but I have ten times the work and design area and working from home is great. Now, I have the best of both worlds, I run the gift business and the real estate business from my home office. In my business 92% of orders are via the phone and the internet.

4. Have the positives outweighed the negatives, and if so, how?

My positive experiences have definitely outweighed the negatives.

In this case, my most positive experiences are that I have met many people and made new friends by just being me, conducting good business, giving my customers great quality products at great values. Making people smile is what I do.

The positive rewards are so much greater than the challenges. People come into your life for a reason. Life is a journey and you must forge ahead with positive thoughts always.

Something that has helped me is reading a lot and reading great quality inspirational reads. Knowledge is power and to implement what you read and live by it is so big. I recommend “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrnes.

When you read this, you become to understand your thought process and how it all works in your favor when you remain positive, positive things happen.

This book teaches you the laws of attraction, if you think big and you envision great things for yourself then great accomplishments will happen. It’s working for me.

Here’s another saying: “It’s all in your mind”. Mind over Matter. You can control your mind to make good things flourish all around you in life.

5. What would you recommend for anyone looking to go into business for themselves?

Yes, I encourage everyone to follow their dreams, if you want to run your own business and you’re a hard worker with motivation and the drive for always wanting more than GO FOR IT! You are the one that makes it happen!

The philosophies on building your own empire are plenty and I’m happy to share them.

• Do your research and implement a business plan
• Organize your life: God first, family second, business third.
• Think Big and always Think outside of the box
• Believe in yourself and take risks
• Be willing to Evolve throughout your career – entertain an open mind
• Never Quit
• Always give back and help others who are less fortunate than you (This is the biggest reward of all)
• When success comes, never forget who you are or where you came from

No matter what the challenge is there is always a way to move past it to a positive outcome.

Let nothing or no one interfere with your dreams for your future goals.
