Also, in those stores that had it, the second clerk wouldn't be allow, by rule, to take over from the first person unless specifically requested, in which case you might as well ask for the manager anyway. Another technique that can be used is the following. I don't know how it works in the States but our sales staff, I used to be one, usually earn commission for each sale, so what I sometimes do is walk right past the jerk after, wasting his time for a fair while, and then approach another sales staff and try my luck with him/her.
